What We Find by Robyn Carr

I read Robyn Carr’s What We Find. This is the first book of the Sullivan’s Crossing series. She is the same author who wrote Virgin River. I was very impressed with her writing. This was my first book that I have read by Robyn Carr. I was instantly intrigued by this book.

Synopsis

Maggie Sullivan knows she needs to slow down and the best place to do that is Sullivan’s Crossing. The campground and charming general store at the crossroads of the Colorado and the Continental Divide Trails belong to Maggie’s eccentric father, Sully, and she longs to indulge in his simple way of life.

But when Maggie must take responsibility for the Crossing, a quiet and serious hiker, Cal Jones, offers to lend a hand. Maggie is suspicious—until she discovers the true reason for his deliberate isolation.

Though Cal and Maggie each struggle with loss and loneliness, the time they spend together gives them hope for something brighter on the horizon…if only they can learn to find peace and healing—and perhaps love—with each other.

My Review of What We Find

I loved this book. Once I started it, I had a hard time putting it down. The way Robyn Carr describes Colorado, and the scenery makes you believe you are right there in the woods cuddling up with a warm fire. I love the romance of Maggie and Cal. They both have pasts that they are trying to get over. Maggie is a neurosurgeon who left her thriving practice in Denver in need of a mental break. This was due to a lawsuit that was brought against her after a young patient in the ER died. Her boyfriend left her after almost 8 years together. She decides to go and visit her dad, Sully at his campground which is where she meets Cal Jones.

Cal is an attorney and widow of 2 years. His wife Lynne tragically passed away from scleroderma after 8 years of marriage. After she passed away, he felt lost and alone and sets out to hike on some trails, which brings him to Sullivan’s Crossings. Maggie and Cal are trying to move forward with their lives, their careers, while trying to figure out if the future will have each other in it. Maggie believes that Cal is homeless and jobless. But looks can be deceiving. Never judge a book by its cover.

What We Find

I felt so bad for Maggie she has been through a lot, and she is a very strong woman. Her ex-Andrew was a total jerk and did not deserve her. I was hoping for her some happiness for Maggie. She then meets Cal at the campground. At first, she is suspicious of Cal, she thinks he is homeless and has no direction in his life. He hangs out at the campground, reads and chats with Sully most days. While Sully is recovering from a heart attack, Cal jumps in to help and shows Maggie a different side of himself.

What she sees is a handsome, charming man who makes her feel safe and at ease. It starts off as a friendship, but sparks begin to fly. I enjoyed watching their relationship grow. Cal does dip his toes back into the world of lawyering and Maggie has to figure out her next step. She is scared to get back into the OR but that is what she was born to do.

What We Find by Robyn Carr

I cannot wait to start the second book, Any Day Now.

Check out another favorite of mine. The Flowers in the Attic series.
